This fall I’ve seen a lot of new movies and here are some of my favorites of the year. Most, if not all (of the movies released in 2016), I’ve seen after summer.

  1. Nocturnal Animals
  2. Swiss Army Man
  3. American Honey
  4. Finding Nemo
  5. The King’s Choice

1. Nocturnal Animals

I adored this movie so much that at certain times during it I leaned forward from my seat, with my elbows on my knees and my hands under my chin, I just glared at the screen in awe. From the bizarre opening to the emotionally scaring ending. This was the best movie experience I had all year. Now, just watching the trailer gives me chills and goose bumps. The story, the acting, the cinematography, the music, everything was amazing. I even loved the symbolism of Amy Adams’ character’s make up. Right after I rushed to the library and picked up the book. So far, the movie is much better than the book. It is the most beautiful movie I’ve seen in a long time. Oscar prediction for best director Tom Ford, and best adapted screenplay.

2. Swiss Army Man

This was another movie I enjoyed immensely. Never have I ever seen a movie be so ridiculous and touching at the same time. At times it is a serious movie, but then it’s not, reminding us that that’s what it is, it is just a movie. This is the most original movie I’ve seen in years. You think you know where the movie is headed, but really you don’t know.

3. American Honey

It takes a lot for me to like long movies. When I saw this movie was almost three hours long, I was skeptical. What I liked the most about this one was that you really forget that you’re watching a movie. The soundtrack is magnificent and the acting is superb. The aspect ratio was surprising and gave it a really raw feeling.

4. Finding Dory

A heartbreaking tale which I now just realize has a lot in common with Lion (2016). How the movie focuses on what is right about Dory, rather what is wrong with her, makes this movie a great one. An adorable and incredible follow up to Finding Nemo (2013).

5. The King’s Choice (Kongens Nei)

Felt I should include the best Norwegian movie of the year. An Oscar contender which is pretty good for a Norwegian flick. It may have been because a lot of it is in German. It is quite good, but got to say it was a little too long. The climax scene of the movie is brilliant and absolutely perfect.
